Healthcare reform is currently being debated in Congress and there is a real danger that the legislation that results will not include a universally available public healthcare option-- the key to covering everyone and lowering costs. Insurance companies and their lobbyists are urging Congress to adopt a plan that eliminates or limits the public option. We urge you to make your voice heard on this critical issue. Below you will find several options for taking action and for promoting accessible affordable healthcare for all. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege.
"This is going to be a long, hot summer when it comes to the debate on health care, because, as you know, there are so many proposals floating on Capitol Hill, some that include the mandate, some that have a public option, of course, and many Democrats would like to have the single-payer option" – Democratic strategist

Why do we spend so much more on healthcare, per capita, than other developed countries? Why do we achieve worse outcomes on several important measures than countries that spend far less? Why do we spend up to twice as much per person as countries that provide universal coverage while leaving as many as 50 million Americans without insurance?
The salience of those questions has grown over the past several decades. Even while most Republicans fight tooth and nail against allowing Americans the choice of a universally available public healthcare option; the American people continue to show overwhelming support – nearly 8 out of 10 Americans in the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll.

The term 'single-payer' has been and will be thrown around a lot in regards to reforming our broken health care system. Yet what exactly is it? Single-payer is a method of providing financing for healthcare, that is, a way to fund the access to the providers of healthcare. It says nothing about the providers, who may be public or private as they choose. The only difference to them is that billing is immensely simplified, as they do need to chase down payment from an overwhelming number of deadbeat insurance companies and patients.
In single-payer systems all healthcare is pre-paid. There would be no co-pays, no deductibles, and no premiums. For more information, be sure to download and read these concise, useful, and informative links and handouts, prepared by the Santa Barbara Chapter of Healthcare for All:
